Installation note upfront: The Savvy Legacy JK/JKU rear bumper requires cutting out the stock rear crossmember and welding in the included new 3/16" steel crossmember. This is the modification that enables the extreme clearance geometry and it is worth knowing before you order rather than mid-install. Full instructions are included. If you are not comfortable with this modification, a local fabrication shop can complete it in a single session. (See instructions below)
With that said, at just 10 lbs and gains of +2.75" ground clearance and +4" departure clearance over the factory JK bumper, the Savvy Offroad Legacy 6061-T651 Aluminum Rear Bumper delivers the biggest clearance numbers of any rear bumper available for the 2007–2017 Jeep Wrangler JK and JKU. Built from 3/16" 6061 aluminum the heat-treated, precipitation-hardened structural alloy with approximately 35% higher tensile strength and nearly double the yield strength of 5052 aluminum CNC laser-cut, bent, and TIG-welded in the USA using updated Jeep JK CAD models. Modular replaceable skin. Integrated D-ring recovery mounts. Trimmable lighting template for Rigid SR-L, Rigid Ignite, and Baja Designs S1 & S2 flush mount lights. King of the Hammers proven.
This is the rear bumper for the JK or JKU builder who has decided they want the best aluminum, the most clearance, and the lowest profile and is ready to make the crossmember modification that delivers all three.
Most JK rear bumper manufacturers describe their clearance gains in vague terms "maximum departure angle," "high clearance design," "superior obstacle clearance." Savvy publishes the actual measured numbers because the numbers are what matter when you are deciding whether your bumper will clear a ledge or catch on it.
+2.75" of ground clearance means the lowest point of the Legacy bumper sits 2.75 inches higher than the lowest point of the factory JK rear bumper. On rocky terrain, that 2.75 inches is often the difference between clearing the approach to a ledge and dragging the bumper across it.
+4" of departure clearance means the rear bumper geometry allows a 4-inch steeper descent angle before the bumper contacts an obstacle on exit. On a JKU with a longer wheelbase, where departure angle is already the platform's biggest geometric limitation on steep exits, 4 additional inches is a meaningful, trail-changing improvement.
These numbers come from a crossmember modification that unlocks a geometry a bolt-on bumper cannot achieve. They are the reason serious JK builders make that modification rather than settling for the clearance a bolt-on design provides.
The Legacy line uses 6061 aluminum. The Krawler Lite line uses 5052 aluminum. Both are quality alloys but they are not the same material and they are not interchangeable for this application.
5052 aluminum has excellent corrosion resistance, good formability, and is the right alloy where the panel needs to flex rather than resist. Tensile strength approximately 33,000 psi.
6061 aluminum is heat-treated and precipitation-hardened a process that fundamentally changes the alloy's crystalline structure to maximize strength and hardness. Tensile strength approximately 45,000 psi. Yield strength nearly double that of 5052. Harder surface, higher impact resistance, better behavior under repeated direct rock contact. This is the alloy used in aerospace structural components, precision machined parts, and applications where impact resistance is the primary design criterion.
On a rear bumper that makes direct contact with rocks and ledges on technical terrain, that difference is not a spec sheet detail. The 6061 skin resists deformation better under the same impact and when it does eventually need replacement, you swap the skin rather than the bumper. That is the Legacy design philosophy: the strongest alloy that makes sense in a bumper skin, combined with the modular repairability that protects your investment for the long term.
The Savvy Legacy JK rear bumper requires cutting out the factory rear crossmember and welding in the included new 3/16" steel crossmember.
Here is what the modification actually involves. The factory JK rear crossmember runs across the rear of the frame between the frame rails. It is the structural member the factory bumper mounts to and the component that limits how high and tight a bumper can sit against the body. Cutting it out and welding in Savvy's new crossmember repositions that mounting point in a way that unlocks the +2.75" ground and +4" departure clearance geometry. The new crossmember is stronger than what it replaces, 3/16" steel with integrated D-ring mounts and the modification is permanent in the same way any weld is permanent.
This is not a beginner fabrication job. We recommend having it done by a professional welder or experienced off-road fabrication shop. It is not a daylong project a competent welder can complete it in a few hours. The clearance gain it enables is the reason JK builders make this modification rather than settling for what a bolt-on design can deliver.
Many Jeep JK/JKU rear bumpers add too much bulk, hang too low, or make trail damage expensive to fix. The Savvy Legacy rear bumper is designed to deliver better clearance, lighter weight, integrated recovery capability, and modular repairability in one serious off-road setup.
For Jeep owners looking for a Jeep JK rear bumper or Jeep JKU rear bumper that improves departure angle, reduces rear weight, and still offers strong recovery points and lighting flexibility, this design gives you a strong balance of clearance, durability, serviceability, and aggressive styling. It is an ideal upgrade for rock crawlers, off-road trail rigs, and well-built daily-driven Jeeps that need real rear-end protection.
Does this really require cutting the rear crossmember?
Yes and we are direct about it because you need to know before ordering. The stock rear crossmember must be cut out and the included new 3/16" steel crossmember must be welded in. This is the modification that enables the +2.75" ground clearance and +4" departure clearance geometry. The new crossmember is stronger than the factory piece and includes integrated D-ring recovery mounts. Full installation instructions are included. Professional welding is strongly recommended. (See full instructions below)
Does this fit both the 2-door JK and 4-door JKU?
Yes. The Legacy 6061 aluminum rear bumper fits all 2007–2018 Jeep Wrangler JK 2-door and JKU 4-door models.
Why 6061 instead of 5052 aluminum?
6061is heat-treated and precipitation-hardened, giving it approximately 35% higher tensile strength and nearly double the yield strength of 5052. It is harder, more impact resistant, and holds up better under direct rock contact. The Legacy uses 6061 because the frame-mounted, maximum-clearance bumper that makes crossmember contact with rocks deserves the strongest aluminum alloy available.
Can I replace just the skin if it gets damaged?
Yes. The rear skin is a modular component that replaces independently of the new crossmember, D-ring mounts, and frame mounting. Order a replacement skin, swap it out everything else stays on the Jeep.
What lighting does this bumper accept?
The rear skin includes a cutting template for Rigid Industries SR-L Flush Mount, Rigid Ignite Flush Mount, and Baja Designs S1 & S2 Flush Mount lights. All lights sold separately.
How does this compare to steel bumpers in this clearance category?
Most steel JK rear bumpers with comparable clearance numbers weigh 30–50 lbs before recovery hardware. The Legacy weighs 10 lbs. That weight difference reduces stress on aging components, improves handling, and gives you the same or better clearance numbers in a fraction of the mass. 6061 aluminum also outperforms mild steel in yield strength on a per-pound basis this is not a compromise, it is a superior material in the right application.
What finish does it ship in?
Raw aluminum. Powder coat or paint to your preferred color, or leave natural 6061 does not rust in raw condition.
